The purpose of this organization is to bring together those people interested in history and genealogy, especially in Macon County, to obtain and copy old deeds, ledgers, diaries, Bible records, church minutes and court records for preservation.  Their main function will be to discover and collect any material which may help to establish or illustrate the history of the area: its exploration, settlement and activities.  Through the efforts of the Society members, many projects have successfully been accomplished to preserve these historic records and documents.  The collection of genealogical materials are housed at the Macon County Court House, room 202, in Lafayette TN.

Tennessee Census records 1820-1880

Macon County Census records 1880 - 1920

Macon County Clerk & Master Court records (partial records) starting in 1844 thru present.

Cal's Column - 927 pages of genealogical research by Rev. Calvin Gregory. 

Revolutionary, War of 1812, Mexican and Cival War material.

Macon County Cemetery Records - Complete Listing Volume I and II.

Area Funeral Home records,

Sumner, Smith, Wilson County records.

Kentucky Marriages and Obituaries.

Virginia Census, wills and Marriages.

North Carolina and Kentucky Land Grants.

Family Histories and Genealogies, published and non-published.

Macon County Times Newspaper (on micro film)

Minutes from several area Churches.

Native American records.

Various area Miscellaneous records on microfilm - doctor and store ledgers, personal papers, pre 1900 deeds, ect.

Numerous others that have been donated to the Macon County Library.

Membership Form

An invitation is extended to everyone to become a member of our organization. We have approximately 250 members from coast to coast. Dues are $15.00 per year (renewable in January). Listed below are some of the benefits to being a member of the Macon County Historical Society.

A quarterly newsletter, where members can submit up to four queries per year to run three times in alternate newsletters. The newsletter contains various information, with one general subject each quarter.

A 10% discount on all books published by the society after January 1, 1997 (excluding reprints and the Macon County Family History Book).

A discount on cemetery markers.

A discount on metal signs to designate lost cemeteries, noted historical sites, burial or home place of a war veteran, etc.

A monthly meeting is held on the first Saturday of every month at 9:00 a.m. at the Macon County Welcome Center, 685 Hwy 52 West, Lafayette, TN.  Although attendance is not a requirement all members and the general public are invited to attend.
